The 2024 edition of the Women’s T20 World Cup will kick off on October 3, with Bangladesh taking on Scotland in the opening match. Australia, the reigning champions, won the 2023 title after defeating South Africa and are the most successful team in the tournament’s history, having claimed six championships from the eight editions held so far.

The first Women’s T20 World Cup took place in 2009, where England secured the title by beating New Zealand in the final. Apart from Australia and England, West Indies are the only other team to have won the tournament, claiming victory in 2016 by defeating Australia in the final. Over the years, New Zealand, India, and South Africa have all finished as runners-up at various points.

Australia’s dominance began in the 2010 edition when they won their first title, defeating New Zealand in the final. The White Ferns had an impressive run through the group stage but couldn't stop Australia in the final showdown. Australia continued their success in 2012, beating England in Sri Lanka to become the first team to defend their Women’s T20 World Cup title.

In 2014, the tournament expanded to include 10 teams. Australia went on to make history by winning three consecutive titles, beating England once again in the final, this time in Mirpur, Bangladesh. However, their winning streak was interrupted in 2016 when West Indies claimed their first ICC trophy, overcoming Australia in the final held at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Australia bounced back in 2018, defeating England to win their fourth title. In 2020, India reached their first-ever T20 World Cup final but fell short as Australia cruised to victory in front of a record crowd at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, capturing their fifth title.

In 2023, Australia continued their winning ways by defeating South Africa to claim their sixth championship. Notable records from the Women’s T20 World Cup include Suzie Bates, who is the only batter to score over 1,000 runs in the tournament, and Shabnim Ismail, who holds the record for the most wickets, with 43.

The 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup was initially scheduled to take place in Bangladesh but was moved to the UAE due to ongoing protests in Bangladesh.
